A two-month journey circling Australia was terminated in the wake of the tragic passing of an elderly woman who was left behind by the cruise liner on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been hiking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the party for a break. The liner sailed away leaving her and went back several hours later after the ship staff realised the lady was unaccounted for.

An extensive search operation found her person the following day.

Officials are looking into the incident, alongside investigators and the state coroner.

The CEO of the cruise operator announced that travelers and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the rest of the voyage had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and prior mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that travelers would be provided a total repayment, and said the company was working "to arrange the return journeys of the passengers via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also published an latest communication, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Master" preventing any new passengers from entering the ship.
